Art is typically a Fun Friday activity in our room! Concepts that students are learning in other subjects are supported through art. It also allows students to explore a variety of materials in a creative way.
Once a week students receive a directed drawing lesson on how to use the Visual Alphabet or what I refer to as their shape sheet, as another way to demonstrate comprehension from our weekly book reads. One of the early literacy skills that we work on with some of our students is to bring meaning to marks on a page that they have created. Directed Drawing is another way for students to make sense of their "marks on a page". The goal is for these skills to transfer into their writing. Drawing gives students another option for communicating their wants, needs and to demonstrate their understanding.
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way-things I had no words for. " Georgia O'Keefe
